Abstract

Domestic wastewater management, particularly greywater generated by bathing, laundry, and kitchen activities, is an important environmental concern in densely populated settlements such as Bungin Island in Sumbawa Regency, Indonesia. The direct discharge of untreated greywater into the surrounding environment may contribute to environmental pollution and increase exposure to environmental health risks. This community service program aimed to strengthen community knowledge, preparedness, and participation in household greywater management while introducing practical skills for operating a simple filtration-based treatment system. The program was conducted from May to July 2026 using a community-based approach that included education, training, technology demonstrations, and mentoring. A total of 20 participants participated, including village officials, members of the Village Consultative Body (BPD), neighborhood leaders (RT/RW), and community representatives. Program evaluation used pre-tests and post-tests, participatory observation, discussions, and participant feedback. Following the intervention, knowledge increased from 52.4% to 76.2%, community preparedness from 48.7% to 65.8%, village officials’ preparedness from 45.1% to 68.9%, and willingness to participate from 86.3% to 95.8%. The observed improvements indicate that the combination of education, technology demonstrations, and practical engagement enhanced participants’ knowledge, preparedness, and willingness to participate in household greywater management. However, the remaining gap in preparedness underscores the need for continued technical training, mentoring, and institutional support to strengthen participants’ capacity for independent, sustainable implementation of greywater management practices.
